Y Crew

Y Crew originated in September 2000 when Janet Roe and Karen Tredget from Lawn Community Church offered to take on an after school club at Lawn Junior School. The area Scripture Union evangelist, Steve Hutchinson, was writing a children’s alpha type course so we offered to trial it at the school. Folks from the Church were already involved in the school as parent helpers, teaching and taking assemblies so a good relationship had been built up and Chris Brown, the head teacher, was happy for us to pilot the material.

So using weekly emails from Steve that outlined his teaching we started Y Crew, calling it that as the proposed name of the course was going to be Y God. The aims of the course were to encourage the children to ask those big questions such as Who made God?, Is the bible true?, What does God look like?, and by a fun filled session using the bible and sharing our faith to give the children opportunity to make their own minds up about Christianity.

The initial course ran for 6 weeks and we fed back to Steve how the sessions had gone, what worked and how we expanded it with games and fun sheets. The children wanted to carry on meeting the following term so we worked on a similar plan and used other bible stories to build on their understanding. We later trialled a further 6 sessions from Steve and eventually the 12 week course was published in book form as So, why God? The children from that original course at Lawn Primary are thanked by Steve in the front of the book and we presented the school with a personally signed copy!

Since 2002 other churches across the Old Town Parish and further a field have caught the vision for Y Crew and there have been clubs at Lainesmead, King William Street, Lethbridge, Ferndale and more recently Liden and Nythe schools. The clubs tend to run for 6 weeks a term with many of the children attending having no church connections at all. The stories and discussions give them the chance to find out about God and his plan for the world for themselves.
